Southern Star receives approval for Kansas modernization project

Owensboro, KY – Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline, Inc. (Southern Star) is excited to announce the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved one of the largest modernization projects in company history.

FERC approved the Line DPA project during its monthly meeting on December 19, 2019. Southern Star submitted the original filing nearly one year ago on December 21, 2018.

A single 36-inch natural gas pipeline will replace two essentially parallel pipelines spanning more than 30 miles between Southern Star’s Welda and Ottawa compressor stations in eastern Kansas. The total project cost is $145 million.

Jimmy Staton, President & CEO stated, “This modernization project will enable our company to manage its system more effectively while continuing to provide safe and reliable transportation service to customers.”

The project will benefit Kansas and the local economies in Franklin and Anderson Counties from an increase in tax revenue and spending for construction, lodging, meals and other commercial and retail businesses. The first phase of construction will begin in February 2020 with completion expected by September 2020.
